If you're a cat lover, then you are an ailurophile, and most likely dedicated to ailurophilia or "all things cat." This obscure
terminology comes from the Greeks: ailouros means "cat", philos "lover of."
It looks like the ancient Greeks, similar to the Egyptians before them, elevated cats to the rank of gods. In ancient Egypt, the cat
goddess Bast was a defender and cats were so revered, killing them was punishable by death. In Greece, Bast became known as
Aelurus, and was associated the moon goddess Artemis, the maiden of the hunt and defender of wild things.
It's said that cats have never forgotten they were at time worshipped as gods. And if you live in 1 of the approximately 111
million American homes that has at least 1 cat, you most likely know this already. But do you know that cats have more bones than
human beings? Humans have 206; cats have 230. Or that cats have proportionately bigger eyes than humans and can see 6 times
better in the dark? Do you know that domestic cats can run at speeds of up to 30 mph, or that on average, cats sleep for 16 hours
a day?
It is our wish to supply as much info about cats on this website as possible. There are dozens of articles here
already, so we suggest you bookmark www.new-cat.com so you can come back often and easily. We cover
everything from the very practical (how to handle fleas, hairballs and other unpleasantries); to the purely informative (our
special section on breeds); to the downright whimsical (walking your cat on a leash, playing with your cat and getting good
toys).
We hope you have fun with our articles on Cat
Breeds & Cat Care and
selection of Cat eBooks.
