Those of us who are pet owners know what faithful and wonderful companions they make. Always there for us, pets definitely help us live not only healthier, but longer lives. This relationship with a beloved pet, however, can become a problem if one of the household members develops an allergy.
Allergy Sufferers
Studies have shown that approximately 15% of the population suffers from an allergy to a dog or cat. It has also been found that about one-third of those who are allergic to cats still choose to live in a household with a cat. In some cases, pet allergies don’t start until the pet has lived in the household for a year or two.
Decrease Exposure
Since repeated allergy flare-ups can have long term health ramifications, it is important to discuss this carefully and thoroughly with your physician. Children with repeated allergy flare-ups can develop permanent lung damage. One way to decrease your exposure to the animal and still live happily is to keep the animal outside.
Living Together In Harmony
Although it takes work, if the allergy sufferer has only a mild reaction to the animal there are ways they can live in harmony. Here are a few of them:
Bathe the animal weekly in a specially formulated shampoo that removes dander.
Use a room purifier to remove airborne animal dander.
Dander can be transferred to upholstered furniture, so be sure to keep the animal off of upholstered furniture.
If possible, remove carpeting from the home, replacing it with wood flooring.
In order to trap dander, use a vacuum with a HEPA filter.
Wash area rugs on a regular basis with warm water.
Each time an allergy sufferer handles the animal they should wash their face and hands.
Seek Help
If the allergy sufferer has tried the above methods and over-the-counter antihistamines and decongestants don’t help, seeking the help of an allergist is the next step. Given on a regular basis, immunotherapy shots (vaccinations) may help your body build up a natural tolerance to specific allergens.
Hopefully, by using the methods discussed above, you’ll be able to live a healthy and long life with your beloved pet. |
