10 essential tips to help you take the best possible care of your pregnant cat:

1. Keep Your Pregnant Cat Indoors

There is more than one reason to keep your expectant kitty indoors. In addition to the danger involved in the outdoor world and the fact that a pregnant cat should not give birth outdoors, some queens go into heat even during pregnancy. You know what this means, of course -- cats are capable of being pregnant with 2 different litters at the same time!

2. Do Not Give Any Medication During Pregnancy

Unless it is an emergency, and approved by your vet, a pregnant cat should not be given any medication. Since the same directive goes for deworming or flea products, check with your vet if your cat has fleas or worms.

3. Find A Home For Your Kittens -- Before They Are Born

You know, of course, that finding a home for new kittens can be very time-consuming. Not only will you have more time to find them a home before they are born, you’ll have peace of mind knowing they already have a new home.

4. Keep Other Cats Away From Her

Even if she knows her other cat-family members well, a pregnant cat wants their privacy during this period. So if you have other cats in the family, keep them away from your pregnant cat.

5. Check Which Vet Is Available

If there is no emergency veterinary clinic in your area, find out which vet is available for emergency care. One phone call to a local vet is usually enough. Be sure to have a piece of paper handy with the closest emergency veterinary clinic information.

6. Give Your Kitty The Right Food

Cat food, specially designed to meet the needs of pregnant and nursing families, should be high in calcium and protein. Vitamin supplements are also recommended.

7. Make Your Cat A Comfortable Nest Bed

Two weeks before your cat is ready to give birth, fill a box with newspaper. Place the newspaper-filled box in a warm sheltered place, preferably where your cat frequently visits.

8. Use Non-Clumping Litter For Her Box

Since cats sometimes give birth in the litter box, clumping litter should not be used. If the clumping style litter is used, it can get all over the sac causing mother cat to refuse to clean her newborn off, with the end result of the baby kitten drowning in its own fluid.

9. Buy Enough Food For Your Kitty … And You

Since you don’t want to leave your cat alone on the days just before and just after birth, make sure you stock up on enough food for both you and your mother cat.

10. Get The Right Information About Cat Pregnancy

In order that you won’t panic, getting the right information about a pregnant cat is important. By understanding what you are seeing and hearing, you’ll be able to recognize if there are any complications and possibly solve the problem yourself.
